The Genesis of a "Fuck You" Attitude
When I first came to Santa Barbara in 1988, I was one year into a five year period of sobriety. At that time I did not drink alcohol, did not use drugs,(never really did much of those anyway), and did not smoke cigarettes. I even made a concerted effort not to swear. I also was into the total fitness thing at the time. You know...jogging, eating right, and the obligatory gym visits. The point I'm trying to make here is that I was probably the "best" person I've ever been. Guess what? That just wasn't good enough for some people. I was still nitpicked to death. And when nothing too damaging was available, they would just create it. This whole incident was a epiphany for me. To most people this would have been no great revelation, but at the time I was still fairly naive when it came to human nature. I was still operating under this "brotherhood of man" delusion. That has obviously changed. I now realize that certain people are going to dislike you regardless of what you do. They will use all kinds of clever verbiage to justify what they do, but in actuality they are merely masking certain base human traits, i.e. envy. I now have a "fuck you" attitude. I'm not belligerent about it, but I just don't give a shit what people think. And you know what? I'm a lot happier because of it.Have an enlightened day.
